MCESC Language and Literacy Center District Services
The MCESC Language and Literacy Center partners with schools and districts to improve literacy outcomes through evidence based professional learning, consultation, coaching, and technical assistance. The MCESC-LLC supports educators and leaders in implementing structured literacy practices aligned with the Science of Reading, Ohio's Plan to Raise Literacy Achievement, and an integrated Multi Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).
Services include professional development, instructional coaching, literacy systems planning, curriculum implementation support, dyslexia guidance, assessment and data analysis, progress monitoring consultation, and customized literacy solutions tailored to each district's goals. Whether you are strengthening classroom instruction, building staff capacity, or developing sustainable literacy systems, the MCESC-LLC team is committed to helping educators create meaningful learning experiences that lead to lasting student success.

What is Structured Literacy and Why Does it Matter?
Structured Literacy is an evidence-based approach to reading and writing instruction that is explicit, systematic, and carefully sequenced. It teaches students how spoken and written language work by directly developing skills such as phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, spelling, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and written expression.
This approach matters because not all students learn to read easily or intuitively. Structured Literacy provides clear, intentional instruction that helps students build strong foundational skills and apply them with increasing independence.
While Structured Literacy is especially important for students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties, its principles support all learners by making reading instruction more direct, organized, and responsive to individual needs.
What is Orton-Gillingham?
Orton Gillingham is an explicit, systematic, cumulative, and multisensory approach to teaching reading, spelling, and written language. It directly teaches students how sounds, letters, syllables, and word patterns work together to support accurate and fluent reading.
Orton Gillingham instruction is diagnostic and prescriptive, meaning lessons are individualized and continually adjusted based on how a student responds to instruction. New learning builds upon previously mastered skills, allowing instruction to target specific areas of need while supporting continued growth.
Orton Gillingham is especially well known for supporting students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties. Its individualized and structured approach helps students strengthen foundational literacy skills and become more confident and independent readers and writers.
